Clean Water in Rwanda
On a sunny, breezy morning at the foot of Rwanda’s stunning Virunga Mountains, beside Volcanoes National Park, we joined our partners from Move Up Global and IREME for a memorable visit to Nyabirehe Public School in the Gataraga sector of Musanze District. The event had been thoughtfully arranged by our partners in close collaboration with local leaders.
Approximately 250 people gathered, including honored elders, local officials, parents, and a local Rotarian, to take part in the day’s events. We conducted a hands-on demonstration of the Safi Gravity Filter system alongside the MUG and IREME team. What followed was a joyful celebration filled with singing, dancing, poetry, and theatrical performances by students, all themed around the importance of clean drinking water.
The team and local leaders delivered a vital message. Distributing water filters is just the beginning. True change comes when people understand how and why to use the filters in their homes and schools. Local leaders delivered heartfelt speeches about the health benefits of clean water and encouraged families to utilize the systems daily.
Community education is essential to turn access into impact.
In the days that followed, MUG and IREME distributed 42 filters and 84 cups at Nyabirehe Public School, and 94 filters and 188 cups at Rwinzovu Public School.
An additional 129 filters were distributed to families throughout the Gataraga Sector, reaching the surrounding communities served by Nyabirehe and Rwinzovu schools. This initial program targeted families with children exhibiting low BMI and signs of intestinal worm infections. The team surveyed these initial 124 families regarding water source, available water quality, current water treatment, and health.
While detailed quantitative outcomes are still pending, the initial data demonstrate the need for clean water. The community water and hygiene workshops mark a foundational step toward improved pediatric health and educational performance in these underserved communities.
The need for water is massive and the opportunity to create lasting change has never been greater. Mighty Water and its partners are prepared to expand with a proven model ready to bring clean water to Rwanda.
